A pencil drill is a simple dry fire exercise used in firearms training to check trigger control and follow-through. By placing a pencil eraser-first into an unloaded firearm, instructors can see whether the shot breaks cleanly without unwanted movement. The point of the drill is diagnostic. If the pencil moves straight back, it suggests a controlled trigger press, while side-to-side movement can reveal flinching, jerking, or grip issues. Because it is done with an unloaded firearm and without live ammunition, the drill removes recoil and noise from the equation. That makes it easier for shooters to focus on fundamentals and spot mistakes they might not notice during live fire.
